SAN ANTONIO— Some Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) students chose to stay home for the spring 2021 semester because their classes were virtual.

OLLU student Catalina Sanchez, a junior majoring in public relations, decided to stay home in Austin, Texas for the spring 2021 semester. All her classes were online this semester, unlike her schedule in the fall.

“Last semester, I would drive at least twice a week,” said Sanchez, “however, this semester I do not have to commute at all.”

During the 2020 holiday break, Sanchez and her family did experience COVID-19 symptoms.

As of Feb. 24, there are a total of 74,835 reported COVID-19 cases in Travis County, according to the New York Times.

To keep up with her assignments, Sanchez treats her online classes as a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. job. Additionally, to help with this she plans her week hour by hour and start working a week ahead on assignments.

“I personally think I’m handling online classes as best as I can,” Sanchez said. “It was an adjustment, but once you get the hang of it, it gets easier.”

OLLU professors have offered resources and course adjustments for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“One of the adjustments I make for students when it comes to [COVID-19] is give them more time on an assignment, be as clear as possible, and meet with them as much as I can,” said AJ Arreguin, a public relations professor at OLLU.

In some way, Sanchez does miss campus life, but at the same time she doesn’t. She has felt alone being on campus, that’s why she is trying to spend as much time as possible with her family. It will be different for her to get back into the groove of campus life for next semester, but she knows that she will be happy to return.

Sanchez said that this gave her an opportunity to be with her family because it will not last forever.

For the spring 2021 semester, OLLU offers asynchronous, synchronous, and face-to-face classes. Asynchronous classes don’t have a set meeting time. Synchronous classes have a specific meeting time with instructors.
