SAN ANTONIO—Our Lady of the Lake University is home to the 2015-2016 conference champions in Volleyball, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Cross Country and Men’s Cross Country. These four titles were well earned by the Saints.
Cross-Country started the success on November 6th in Windcrest, Texas. The men received a total of 36 points as a team and received first place in the Men’s Cross Country Championship. The women went on to compete and earned 20 points. The women placed first in the championship. The key to the win was in OLLU’s Jazmin Garcia who came in first place with an impressive time of 18 minutes and 48 seconds. Second and third place were OLLU runners Gaby Guerrero and Elena Oslund.
The Women’s Soccer team was next to claim their title on November 13th. The team was regular season conference champions, but that wasn’t good enough for the ladies. They went on to conquer the conference tournament against St. Thomas in a one to zero win.
The one goal was scored by senior forward Stephania Vasquez off of a penalty kick in the 88th minute
This is the third year in a row that the Saints have won their regular season and the conference tournament. Coach Arthur Salazar stated that the Saints are “to be the first team in school history to win three consecutive conference titles as well as the first team in the Red River Athletic Conference to win three consecutive titles in the women’s soccer side”.
The players are calling their victory the “Three-Peat”.
The Volleyball team was the last to win their title. The women also won their regular season and continued their journey to the conference tournament. The Saints were lucky enough to get the home court advantage and played here at home on November 14th.
The final game was played against St. Thomas who started strong and won the first set. The Saints made a comeback and fought their way to win the next three sets. In the fourth set of the match, the team came together to secure the win but it was key players like Alysha Blanco who pushed the team. Blanco had an outstanding 20 kills in the match.
Congratulations to all of our Champions! We are proud for our athletes to represent us so well in the Red River Athletic Conference.
