On Saturday, March 30, the Volunteer Unity Council will host the annual vOLLUnteer IMPACT event. This event is open to the Our Lady of The Lake University community.

According to VUC Student Director of Marketing, Naomi Escalera, the event has been an OLLU tradition since 2000. “The day of service, known as vOLLUnteer IMPACT, is an annual university-wide event for OLLU students, faculty and staff. On this day they will be volunteering at multiple San Antonio non-profit organizations simultaneously,” Escalera said.

Service is one of the four core values of the university. Participating in the event allows the OLLU to give back to the community. “Members will be given the chance to experience and create life-time memories with themselves, peers and members of the community by giving their time. This opportunity will allow them to network with non-profit organizations and set an example for generations to come,” Escalera said.

The event will kick-off at 8:00 a.m. in the Library Community Room. “Volunteers first meet at OLLU for breakfast and a kick-off. After check-in, volunteers will spend three to four hours at one of the five service locations. After all of the volunteers return from their service project, they will be given a free lunch with the Sisters of Divine Providence. We would love to invite OLLU to be a part of this long-time service tradition,” Escalera said.

Escalera and the rest of the “leaders of the VUC are still working hard to coordinate all the details of this big event from different service projects to food to t-shirt designs, etc,” she said. “The final agenda is still being finalized but we’ll likely be done around three p.m. The overall agenda and nonprofit projects will be finalized around Spring Break.”

Interested participants should sign up in the Center for Service Learning & Volunteerism in Worden 23 after the list of service projects are announced.

Volunteers should be on the lookout for other events hosted by the VUC. “Weekly service projects with carpooling, as well as opportunities to volunteer at the McCullough Nursing Home here on campus,” Escalera said.
