SAN ANTONIO – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women’s soccer team has shown their consistency on and off the field over the last four seasons. Since 2015, the women have shown their work ethic in the classroom and have been recognized by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
In 2015, the women were awarded the NAIA Scholar Team award and have continued to bring the award back to OLLU each year since. Captain and Senior Maryssa Garza credits the past soccer players and their Coach Arthur Salazar for instilling the need to work just as hard off the field as you do on the field.
Being a student-athlete can be a tough feat and students have to learn to adjust based on schoolwork and their athletics schedule. Garza touched on having the mentality to be able to succeed in both and doing it consistently.
“First-year student-athletes also have to learn how to adjust to the student-athlete life from time management and making sacrifices, but also having the work-hard mentality,” said Garza.
To receive the NAIA Scholar Team award the team must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Since 2015, the women’s team has had a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through 2018.
“It feels great to see our women’s soccer team four years in a row as the NAIA Dak Stats Scholar Team,” said Athletics Director Shane Hurley. “The women’s soccer program has been one of our strongest academically since the beginning.”
The women’s soccer team hopes to continue their winning streak of the NAIA Scholar Team award through this season and more to follow.
