By Lake Front Staff SAN ANTONIO—The Trump Administration is looking to phase out the DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, program. The program currently has 800,000 people enrolled, according to the DACA website. The DACA program was created by former president Barack Obama. Many people who are enrolled in DACA are concerned about their status and are worried about being deported. Immigration has been such a controversial topic in the United States, especially today. Many OLLU students had a lot to say about President Trump’s decision to end the DACA program. “I think it could have been a smart idea [if] he proposed something [in place of] DACA. Trump isn’t giving fair opportunities to everybody who deserves it in this country, and it’s difficult to define who is deserving and who is not, but again, I think it could’ve been smart for a plan to be put into play,” Junior Erika Carbajal-Ramos said. A statement issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services stated, “Due to a federal court order, USCIS has resumed accepting requests to renew a grant of deferred action under DACA.” “As a strong supporter of Latinx people, I feel that my brothers and sisters deserve the equal rights in this country. Mr. Trump is not someone I agree with on this situation, but I feel like there could have been way to deal with the situation.” Freshman Joseph Vasquez said. OLLU President Dr. Diane Melby released a statement in September stating that OLLU will continue to support students in the DACA program. Many OLLU students are members of the DACA program and this university will continue to support the Dreamers Act.
