OLLU community mourns loss of faculty member

Early morning on Jan 28. Our Lady of the Lake University faculty and students learned of the passing of Associate Professor of Learning Resources and Reference/Instruction Librarian Steven Wise. Wise had been a member of the university since 2001.

As reference librarian Wise helped thousands of students across area three OLLU campuses learn how to access and evaluate information for use in academic research.

In addition of being of great service to the student body, Wise was very active in the OLLU community and served in faculty leadership. He had been serving as the current Faculty Assembly president, served as the co-chair of the General Education Committee during the 2016-2017 school year, served as the chair of the Faculty Assembly Taskforce on Faculty Evaluations between 2013-2016 and served as the chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee in 2013-2014.

In 2013 Wise was recognized with the Agnes M. (Lehman) Gloyna Award for Technology Innovation in Teaching and Learning for his knowledge and skills in information literacy that benefited OLLU students. Wise was awarded tenure by the OLLU Board of Trustees on Jan. 31 of 2013.

In 2005 Wise was invited to teach a course in the Mexican American Studies department which became a passion for Wise. Over the years he developed several courses dealing with Mexican Americans and leadership, law and civil rights. Wise also served as an active member of OLLU’s center for Mexican American Studies and Research.

On Jan. 28 the OLLU Community held a prayer service in Sacred Heart Chapel during community hour to pray for, honor and remember Wise. Visitation took place Jan. 30 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home. Visitation continued Jan. 31 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. before the Mass of the Resurrection at Sacred Heart Chapel. Following the Mass a procession was held to Resurrection Cemetery at 11624 Culebra Road.
