As the only university in San Antonio and South Texas with a competitive cheer and dance program in the NAIA, OLLU Cheer earns NCA Nationals bid.
SAN ANTONIO – In a brief time as head cheer and dance coach, Crystal Brock and Assistant Coach Gabe Guel have catapulted the coed OLLU Spirit teams to new heights.
Being hired in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brock faced adversity from the start, but she took the challenge in full stride — already making history.
“Being that this is only our second year, after a COVID-19 restricted [our] first year, building this program from the ground up has been a process,” said Skylar Lloyd, OLLU head cheerleader.

Brock spent most of summer 2021 recruiting. Successfully adding new members to their squad and coached their team to a National Cheerleading Association (NCA) collegiate competition. They earned the university’s very first NCA Collegiate Nationals Bid.
Over a three-day camp this summer, NCA staff trained the OLLU cheer squad on techniques and safety protocols. Each athlete contributed to the team’s success, and those athletes who exemplify the NCA Standards of Excellence earned superior blue ribbons.
They will represent OLLU and the great city of San Antonio in Daytona at the 2022 NCA Nationals Competition.

“It is an amazing accomplishment for Coach Crystal Brock and these student-athletes to obtain their national bid through the NCA,” said Shane Hurley, OLLU athletic director.
The Daytona event, hosted by the NCA, showcases the best program in the country.
“It is an elite group to be associated with and really shows the promise that this program brings our department and university,” Hurley said. “Success at this event will put OLLU on the map in new areas and strengthen recruiting and expansion opportunities.”
OLLU is the only university in San Antonio and South Texas with competitive cheer and dance programs in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

“The level of competition in our nation and recognizing the many teams fighting for their nationals bid, I feel honored and humbled to work with my students and Coach Guel,” said Crystal Brock, head coach for OLLU Spirit.
Throughout the semester, you can catch OLLU Spirit in action, cheering on their fellow student-athletes at various games and events around campus.
