SAN ANTONIO, TX—Our Lady of the Lake University baseball is a little older and wiser as the second season of conference play arrives. The Saints come into the season with a better understanding of each other, philosophies of the coaching staff, and experience of conference play that creates a potent recipe for success.
History was made when the team completed their inaugural season at OLLU finishing in third place at the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament and fourth in the regular season.
“We build off what we started last year…we had to learn from scratch about each other, our system, and about the teams in conference. This year we will have a better understanding and I look for big things for us this year,” said head coach Freddy Rodriguez.
The team is evolving to its best form with the addition of 24 new players, and the performance of the 16 returners. The example is set high by six seniors, David Marte, Josh Razo, Austin Gallego, Anthony DeJesus, and Tyler Davis.
Pitcher, David Marte, believes capitalizing on last season’s success will contribute to improvement for this season. “Nobody knew what to expect last year, and now knowing how to compete with these teams is more comfortable for us. My personal goals are to limit my walks and be more competitive,” said Marte.
Coach Rodriguez has expectations high and remains hopeful for positive results. “This year I’ve noticed a totally different energy and feel from our team, both on and off the field. I think the guys are hungry and prepared for a championship season,” said Rodriguez.
The Saints will be playing all home games at Missions Baseball Academy located on Highway 151 and Old Highway 90. All faculty, staff, and students will be able to enter the game for no charge with an OLLU ID.
“I encourage all of our supporters to come out and cheer our team and we added a lot of night games so families can come out after work and bring their children for a nice family event.”, said Rodriguez.
