SAN ANTONIO – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) kicked off its inaugural conference for mass communication majors, Mass Commference, with an incredible lecture and Q&A session with Andres Munoz, vice president of marketing and communications for Visit San Antonio, on Monday, April 26. The event was hosted by OLLU Professor, Alexis Arreguin and co-host Catalina Sanchez, public relations major.

OLLU students gladly represented the university and gave Munoz their full attention, despite the fact that this year’s event was held virtually.  

“As I was growing up in the 1970’s and 1980’s I was always drawn in by commercials, TV and animation,” Munoz said. “The product that was available back then was so immensely different than what we do today that the evolution has always kept my passion strong.”

Visit San Antonio is the organization that promotes San Antonio as a premiere tourism and meeting destination. Munoz currently has over 20 year experience working for name brands like Visa and Sony.

“The career hasn’t grown old one day,” Munoz said. “I still have to learn.”

Munoz started with Visit San Antonio in February 2012. A native of Columbia, he was brought to the United States by McDonald’s USA to lead their Hispanic account.

“Visit San Antonio’s mission is to bring the world to San Antonio to establish itself in San Antonio.” Munoz said.  

Munoz imparted wisdom and knowledge to the OLLU students in attendance. He reminded them that when he started, social media had not yet been invented.

“It is said that it is easier for marketers who are young to be more creative,” Munoz said. “Therefore it is a career that is dominated by the younger audience; however, for me it has been an extra effort to stay young.”

Mass Commference continued on Tuesday, the 27 and Wednesday the 28.
