SAN ANTONIO—On October 7, in front of Main Building, a crowd gathered for a noble cause. With candles and rosaries as their weapons, OLLU students and faculty, together with the Sisters of Divine Providence, marched with conviction while praying for world peace. The image of Our Lady of Lourdes led the way followed by the firm and devoted steps of the people who went to the procession.
After a brief procession that passed in front of the Main and Moye buildings, the group went upstairs into the Sacred Heart Chapel where two students were singing and playing angelic songs. As soon as the music went quiet, the crowd prayed in silence for world peace.
Sister Gloria Ann Fiedler teamed up with University Ministry to organize and promote the procession. Sister Gloria Ann said that the Sisters of Divine Providence have a history of protecting the Virgin Mary and promoting the prayer of the rosary.
The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette in Lourdes in 1858 and the Sisters of Divine Providence came to San Antonio from France in 1866.
“This was uppermost in the minds and hearts of our sisters when they came here to Our Lady of the Lake,” stated Sister Gloria Ann, “Our Lady of Lourdes is all over this campus.”
The Feast is given by the Holy Church and many other processions occurred on the same night around the world. Sister Gloria Ann said that the processions are formed to respond to Mary’s call. Millions of people from all over the world, especially in Lourdes and Fatima, were praying the rosary in procession and in candlelight with the same purpose. Sister Gloria Ann said that she organized the procession to be in solidarity with everyone else.
“Wherever [Mary] had appeared, she has always pleaded for us to pray the rosary for world peace,” she said.
