SAN ANTONIO – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) is filled with a variety of styles from the students, OLLU freshmen during their first semester show the recent trends in fashion.
Students such as Abigail Macias, Early Childhood Education major, and Sarah Hernandez, Social Work major, have opposite styles. Macias describes her style as, “VSCO meets emo.” With outfits inspired from the band 5 Seconds of Summer, the character Envy Adams from Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and TikTok emo girls. Hernandez, on the other hand, says her style is “comfy chic.” She mentions that her favorite piece of clothing is her jean jacket.
Students Nathan Smith, Early Childhood Education major, and Abigail Avila, Mass Communication for Film major, have a “basic” type of fashion. Smith mentions that his closet is filled with colors and Avila says her go-to style is a striped shirt with ripped jeans. Smith calls his style, “up-to-date and trendy.”
Accessories are also a part of a person’s style. Popular brands of shoes were Converse, Vans, and Doc Martens. Students are also seen with a watch, bracelet, or a scrunchie on their wrists. Popular stores that all 4 students frequently visit are thrift stores such as Goodwill and Texas Thrift, Forever 21 and Old Navy.
Influences for today’s students come from social media, such as Instagram and TikTok. With Instagram’s algorithm, people can like certain posts with the style they want or have, and it will pop up into their feed more often and clothing ads will also show up into their feed. TikTok, a video lip-syncing app, originally known as musical.ly, has morphed into a place where people can express their styles.
With stereotypes like VSCO girls and E-boys and girls, there has become a spectrum of styles in 2019. The VSCO style is an oversized t-shirt, paired with running shorts, a scrunchie, and a HydroFlask. While E-outfits are black, with long-sleeved striped shirts under a regular shirt, paired with chains and combat boots.
Some fashion tips from the students are jeans fit every outfit, eyeliner is a must for dark clothing, and pick a style that you’re comfortable with.
