SAN ANTONIO – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) is presenting a series of workshops dedicated to highlighting Hispanic heritage, arts and culture. Campus clubs and organizations are working together to host these events throughout October, concluding on Nov. 1, Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos).
Carnaval de los Muertos had its first event, Danza and Rhythm-making workshop, on Sept. 30. OLLU partnered with URBAN-15 for an evening of free dance and drum lessons.
OLLU cheerleader, Kahealani Archuleta, was present at the event among the rest of the cheer and dance team.
“It brings awareness to all of us and the community, that there’s more than just one style of dance,” said Archuleta. “Both cheer and dance team participated, so in that way, we were able to become one.”
International Folk and Culture Coordinator Ciji Couvertier feels Carnaval de los Muertos is a great way to “motivate creativity” and engage students to be more involved with on-campus events.
Following Danza and Rhythm-making, an Alter Making workshop was hosted on Oct. 7 by Mission and Ministry. Students met in the Library Community Room and shared why they chose to decorate their alters.

If you missed the first two workshops you still have a chance to attend the Danza and Rhythm performance on Nov. 1. The event is free and invites students to attend, learn and celebrate the cultural history of Dia de los Muertos.
