I was recently scrolling through twitter when I came across a tweet that talked analogized poetry as an invisible Uber drive picking you up and taking you someplace beautiful and I hit that retweet button automatically. I absolutely adore poetry books, right now my to be read shelf contains four books of poetry. Then I realized that so far The Lake Front has only covered works of prose for the monthly book reviews and I immediately knew I would be writing this over a beautiful poetry book that I recommend every person read, and ultimately I chose Born to Love, Cursed to Feel by Samantha King.
Samantha King Holmes is the wife of popular contemporary poet r.h.sin, but what many people don’t know is that in 2016 Holmes debuted her own poetry book. Born to Love, Cursed to Feel is focuses on love from all aspects, the good, the bad and the confusing. Additional themes throughout the book include looking at an issue and realizing a decision is not as simply as black and white and understanding when a relationship turns sour. An example of this is the poem entitled “Fraud” which reads:
“While you were claiming to protect me from others
Someone should have protected me from you.”
With lines reading “Is there no humanity left,” “for once I would like to be measured by the steps I took today rather than the footprints of yesterday,” and “maybe I’m not as okay as I want to believe,” the book is guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings as you flip each page. Some of my favorite poems from the book include “Disorder,” “Envy,” “Justice,” “Try,” “Vow of Silence,” and “War Zone.”

If you haven’t yet dived into the beautiful world of contemporary poetry this is an excellent starting place. Holmes eloquently writes in language that is relatable to our generation making the poems understandable. Often times the poems are also written in a narrative format that flows well and is easy to follow.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone looking to read something new, especially with Valentine’s Day right around the corner. We are all born to find love and cursed to deal with feelings and emotions along the way.
