SAN ANTONIO – It was just a few years ago that I was on a battlefield as a soldier in the Army. Today you can find me in the halls of Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU), a university that has made it a priority to honor veterans.
In April, OLLU opened the Student Veterans Lounge and on Nov. 14 the first Military Appreciation Night was held during the OLLU men’s basketball game.
“It doesn’t matter about the cultural background you have. Veterans here always stick together,” said Student Veterans of America President Tricille Otineru.
Monday Nov. 11 is Veteran’s Day and OLLU will be hosting a ceremony and guest speaker to honor veterans. The event is open to the public.
For many in our community it is much more than a day off for a barbecue with family and friends, or a day off to relax. For veterans like myself, it is a day of remembrance; remembering the fun, crazy and rough times serving our country.
“What veterans day means to me is thinking about the people who sacrificed and gave up their time for God and country,” said OLLU student veteran Scott Rios.
The OLLU Student Veterans of America will be hosting several events from Nov. 11-14. For more information on Veterans Day events at OLLU email email@example.com.
