Our Lady of the Lake University’s cross country team hosted its first meet last weekend at the Windcrest Golf Club in Windcrest, Texas. The meet was a combination of getting together with Drury Inn, the City of Windcrest, Texas, and OLLU to make this possible. This is a big accomplishment, and something very important for the cross country program. There was a lot of great competition during the race. The teams that OLLU hosted were Trinity University, St. Edwards University, McMurry University, Concordia University-Texas, Southwestern University, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, and Huston-Tilloston University.
Trinity University won the meet from the men (8K) and women’s side (5K). Trinity’s score for the men was 21, while the women scored 41.
Though the OLLU men’s team got second place finish, Coach Sherman commented, “There isn’t much to be disappointed about with a second-place finish. I thought the guys competed well, and there is quite a bit to be pleased with. That said, our men’s times will need to improve if we want to compete for a conference title in November.”
On the women’s team, OLLU sophomore Jazmine Garcia, broke the previous record held by fellow teammate, Gabriela Guerrero, last year. Garcia finished with a third-place finish and a time of 19:01.
Sherman commented about the women’s finish, “Our women finished in third place, but it was the fastest team time for our women in history. In other words, on this day, our women were the best team OLLU has ever had, and they did it at our first-ever invitational meet. That is pretty special. Also, Jazmine set a new school record for a cross-country 5K. This was not a bad day at all. That being said, we did not run the first mile intelligently. I believe we could have won this meet with a little more race savvy. I am very excited about this women’s team.”
Sherman also said, “I want to thank the Drury Inn, the Windcrest Golf Club and the City of Windcrest for all of their support.”
