Jayar Brenner, a Student at Michigan State University who wrote and article for studybreaks.com, the original reasoning for the puzzle piece was meant to show that “our children are handicapped by a puzzling condition; this isolates them from normal human contact and therefore they do not ‘fit in’. The suggestion of a weeping child is a reminder that autistic people do indeed suffer from their handicap.” Since then Autism speaks began using it for the symbol for their Autism Awareness campaign.According to alltogetherautism.org, Autism Speaks is looked at negatively as well since they are wanting to find a cure for autism and not truly accepting.

There are two versions of this symbol that are being used for autism awareness. One is a gold infinity symbol because of the fact that gold appears as Au moon the periodic table. The rainbow infinity symbol is used because of the wide spectrum of autism and the fact that the light spectrum are color of the rainbow
